Lawndale is a hidden gem in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. It boasts an amazing location just around 15 minutes from Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, and Hermosa Beach, and only about 35 minutes to Downtown Los Angeles. Despite its central location, the city has some of the most affordable housing in the area. Lawndale has a population of around 32,000 with a young median age of 32 years. Exciting developments in the region, such as the construction of the massive Los Angeles Stadium and Entertainment District in nearby Inglewood, as well as the planned redevelopment of South Bay Galleria on Lawndale’s southern border, are expected to boost the city’s prominence and enhance property values.
History
In the 1800s, Lawndale was part of the Rancho Sausal-Redondo granted to Antonio Ignacio Avila. Toward the end of the 19th century, the rancho was purchased by Scottish nobleman Robert Burnett, who leased the land to farmers Daniel and Catherine Freeman.
The Freemans made the ranch profitable through dry farming. Years later, the area continued to be agricultural but was soon subdivided and gradually urbanized with the coming of the Los Angeles and Redondo railways in 1902. The area’s transformation into residential communities was fast-tracked by the influx of new residents after WWII.
Lawndale incorporated in 1959, two years after the dedication of the Lawndale Civic Center.
